Small Town Coroner
It's the middle of the night and we are on the way to the hospital. Sarah's water has broken and I'm racing through our house trying to get everything we need.
The car is running outside with Sarah waiting on me inside. Today we will be parents..a family..no longer just husband and wife.
I race out to the car and we are off. My mind is alert but my body is still waking up as we drive through the night towards the lights of the hospital.
Sarah is on the phone with her mom who is catching a flight as they speak. They are so excited and emotions are running high.
We've called the hospital and the doctor is on his way. Sarah is being wheeled in now and I'm filling out all the necessary forms. I think there are smaller dictionaries out there than this pile of paperwork. Is this really necessary?
Sarah is changed over into her gown and the ice chips are coming from nurses regularly now. The tv is on but neither of us are watching it. I'm holding Sarah's hand and her contractions are starting to pick up.
A little past dawn and it's time to push. Sarah is red and tired but at the same time very beautiful. Our child is almost here.
Sarah screams and pushes..the machines are beeping around her and now the doctor is in position. One last push and the baby cries taking it's first breath. It's a boy!!!
